THE REGION

East Lothian is a popular holiday destination. We have so many places to visit, both historical and modern, with something to suit every taste and budget.  Most obviously, perhaps, we have beaches galore! The wide-open beauty of Gullane beach is literally on our doorstep, and not too far away there are the breathtakingly beautiful beaches of Yellowcraigs, Seacliff, Tantallon or Belhaven.

You can enjoy many fun day-trips from Gullane including boat trips from North Berwick, the Scottish Seabird Centre, a short climb up North Berwick Law for unbeatable views, Tantallon and Dirleton Castles, the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune,  Preston Mill at East Linton, Musselburgh Race Course, Glenkinchie Distillery, East Links Family Park by Dunbar, to name but a few.  We have well-known castles, churches, museums, hill forts and dovecots.

Annual events of include Edinburgh’s many festivals, Fringe by the Sea in North Berwick and our regional book festival at Lennoxlove.  Gullane Games is held every summer with fun and games for everyone.

For those seeking outdoor thrills there is sailing, wake-boarding, horse-riding and cycling and if you need height and are not satisfied by North Berwick Law or Traprain Law, Edinburgh has some incredible climbing walls.  There are art galleries all over the county and the popular 3 Harbours Arts Festival is held every year at Cockenzie. Some of the area’s beautiful gardens are also open to the public at certain times of year. Visitors can take a short trip to Edinburgh by car or by train for the theatre and arts cinemas, or visit our local theatre, The Brunton, in Musselburgh. The cinema has also recently returned to Fort Kinnaird.

THE AREA

Gullane is a small place with a big name.  Internationally known for its stunning golf courses (Muirfield, Gullane 1, 2 and 3 and Archerfield) and also well known for its wide open beach, it is a wonderful village to stroll around, enjoy an ice cream, a coffee or a meal.  You can take a walk around Goose Green with its traditional playground for the little ones, or head up to the top of Gullane hill for views right across the Forth of Firth and out to the North Sea and over to Edinburgh in the East.  Access to paths Gullane beach paths is through a little gate just over the road from the  flat.

There is plenty to choose from when it comes to places to eat and drink. Internationally renowned Greywalls Hotel and Restaurant is just around the corner for an evening meal or afternoon tea, or for a very different experience you could take fish and chips or a picnic to the beach. La Potiniere continues to enjoy a long-held reputation for first-class food and our local pubs The Clubhouse, The Golf, The Mallard and the new ‘The Main Course’ pizzeria also offer great food for a holiday treat. Gullane has a deli, a Co-op, a butcher, a sweet shop, a local coffee shop and Falko Konditormeister for delicious bread, coffee and cakes – eat in or take-away.

It’s also easy to relax watching the local wildlife. Out on walks you often see birds of prey, sea birds, deer, occasionally a star-fish on the beach, a hare or more frequently pretty rabbits hopping through the dunes.  In-land and away from the sand there are plenty of places to walk along quiet country lanes or through peaceful ancient woodland such as Binning Wood. An alternative way to enjoy the area’s wildlife, perhaps, is The Segway Experience which takes you through the stunningly beautiful Archerfield Estate. Here you can also visit the Archerfield Walled Garden and Spa.
